Welcome to Foundations in New Orleans Voodoo

Course Description
This unique course is the only place where you can learn about New Orleans Voodoo as it is practiced in New Orleans and along the bayous and swamps of Louisiana. We base our teachings on the traditional concept of Ancestor reverence and build upon these teachings in a fascinating exploration of one of the richest and most diverse magicospiritual landscapes in the United States.

In New Orleans, anyone can practice Voodoo. There is no formal religious initiation rite, no rigid orthodoxy, and there are no standard ways to worship—although there are guidelines. New Orleans Voodoo is a fluid, adaptable, syncretic, and inclusive spiritual and religious practice that embraces the hearts of all people, no matter their race, creed, or origin. The loas, spirits, orishas, and mysteries—all terms used to describe the divine archetypal, natural and spiritual forces of New Orleans Voodoo—are ever-changing, manifesting in infinite ways according to the filter of a given culture and geographic location.

Through a variety of assignments and readings, this course will describe and provide guidance for the implementation of the basic concepts and characteristics of New Orleans Voodoo. Students will be introduced to the magickal traditions and learn some practical conjures to enrich their lives. This course is designed for the noninitiate and will provide guidance for anyone wishing to develop a working relationship with the Voodoo Spirits within the context of the folk religion found in and around the New Orleans area as practiced by locals for several hundred years.
